SmallyLittle bird. Lighter files.

WebP compressor · in your browser

Compress WebP and your original stays put.

Drop a WebP and get a lighter copy, made in this tab with libwebp. Everything stays on your device.

Smally in the browser needs JavaScript and a current Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. If it doesn't start here, Smally for Mac compresses images, PDFs and videos: meetsmally.com.

The drop zone above is the real thing: drop your file there, no extra click and no account.

What happens to your WebP

Smally re-encodes the WebP once with libwebp at quality 80 with sharp YUV, the same setting the Mac app uses. When your WebP already stores its pixels without loss, it also tries a lossless WebP and keeps the smaller file.

Transparency is kept. A copy is offered only when it is at least 1% lighter than the original; a WebP that was already saved at a low quality often stays as it is, and the row says Already small.

What stays the same

  • Your original. Smally never changes it; the copy downloads as a new file, named like banner-smally.webp.
  • Your choice. Press Preview on a finished row to drag a divider between the original and the copy, and download only the ones you like.
  • Your privacy. The copy is made in this tab, on your device. Your files never leave this tab.

What it does not do

  • Animated WebP files are left as they are, with a sentence that says why.
  • Up to about 24 megapixels on most computers and 12 on a phone or a small computer, 5 files at a time.

How it works

  1. Drag your file in. Drop your file on the drop zone above, or choose it with the file picker. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Compare the original and the copy. Press Preview on the finished row, drag the divider between the original and the copy, and look at it at 100 % or 200 %.
  3. Download the lighter copy. Download the copy you like. Your original stays untouched, and a copy is offered only when it is lighter.

Is my WebP uploaded anywhere?

No. The copy is made in this tab, on your device. Your files never leave this tab.

Does it keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparency is kept in the copy.

Can it compress an animated WebP?

Not yet. Animated images are left as they are, and the row says so.

Can I turn my JPEG or PNG into a WebP?

The browser version keeps each file in its own format. Smally for Mac can offer As WebP for some PNGs.

Why did my WebP stay the same?

A WebP that is already small or already saved at a low quality often cannot get at least 1% lighter. Smally then keeps the original and says Already small.

What does the browser version count?

How many times its engine starts, how many times it fails and with which error code, and which Smally for Mac links are clicked, by day. Each count is just a number: no cookie, no ID, and nothing that identifies you or your files. Your files never leave this tab.

That record is stored with the time it happened and, within two days, added into a total for the day and deleted. Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs, as any host does; those are separate from these counts.
