Batch compressor · browser and Mac

Batch image compressor for a whole set at once.

Drop up to 5 JPEG, PNG or WebP images at once and download the copies as one zip, made in this tab. For bigger sets, Smally for Mac takes up to 50 files at a time on your Mac.

Smally in the browser needs JavaScript and a current Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. If it doesn't start here, Smally for Mac compresses images, PDFs and videos: meetsmally.com.

The drop zone above is the real thing: drop your file there, no extra click and no account.

In your browser

Drop up to 5 images at a time, JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 50 MB each. Each gets one lighter copy, made in this tab, and Download All puts the copies in one zip.

If you add more than 5, the extra files are not added and the page tells you to clear the finished ones first, then add them again.

On your Mac

Smally for Mac keeps a list of up to 50 files at a time; Clear Finished makes room for more. The list can mix JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, PDF and video. Images are worked on side by side, up to four at a time on a Mac with 16 GB of memory or more and fewer on a Mac with less, while a video or a large PDF runs on its own.

Save All saves the finished copies, each next to its original. Images and PDFs can be up to 200 MB, most images up to 40 megapixels, PDFs up to 100 pages and videos up to 8 GB.

Folders

Smally takes files, not folders. Drop a folder and the row says "This is a folder. Add the files inside it instead." Open the folder in Finder, select the files you want, and drop them together or choose Add Files.

Each file is decided on its own

  • A copy is kept only when it is at least 1% lighter than the original (10% for a video). Otherwise the original stays and the row says why.
  • Your originals are never replaced. Each copy is a new file, named like photo-smally.jpg.
  • Your privacy. The browser copies are made in this tab, and the Mac copies on your Mac. Your files never leave your device.

How it works

  1. Drag your file in. Drop your file on the drop zone above, or choose it with the file picker. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Compare the original and the copy. Press Preview on the finished row, drag the divider between the original and the copy, and look at it at 100 % or 200 %.
  3. Download the lighter copy. Download the copy you like. Your original stays untouched, and a copy is offered only when it is lighter.

How many images can I compress at once?

Up to 5 files at a time in the browser, 50 MB each, with Download All as one zip. Smally for Mac holds up to 50 files at a time; Clear Finished makes room for more.

Can I drop a whole folder?

Not as a folder. A dropped folder gets the sentence "This is a folder. Add the files inside it instead." Select the files inside it and drop them together.

Can I mix JPEG, PNG, PDF and video in one batch?

In Smally for Mac, yes: one list takes JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, PDF, MP4, MOV and M4V. The browser version takes JPEG, PNG and WebP.

Does Smally work on several images at the same time?

Smally for Mac works on images side by side, up to four at a time on a Mac with 16 GB of memory or more and fewer on a Mac with less. A video or a large PDF runs on its own.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The browser copies are made in this tab, on your device, and Smally for Mac works on your Mac. Your files never leave your device.

What does the browser version count?

How many times its engine starts, how many times it fails and with which error code, and which Smally for Mac links are clicked, by day. Each count is just a number: no cookie, no ID, and nothing that identifies you or your files. Your files never leave this tab.

That record is stored with the time it happened and, within two days, added into a total for the day and deleted. Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs, as any host does; those are separate from these counts.
