Drop a PNG and get a lighter copy that keeps its transparency, made in this tab with a palette built in Oklab and oxipng.

## How it works

1. **Drag your file in.** Drop your file on the drop zone above, or choose it with the file picker. Nothing is uploaded.
2. **Compare the original and the copy.** Press Preview on the finished row, drag the divider between the original and the copy, and look at it at 100 % or 200 %.
3. **Download the lighter copy.** Download the copy you like. Your original stays untouched, and a copy is offered only when it is lighter.

## What happens to your PNG

Smally first repacks the PNG losslessly with oxipng: every pixel is identical. It also tries a copy with a 256-colour palette, built in the Oklab colour space, and offers the lighter of the two files.

The palette helps most on logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with flat colours. For photographs the palette would visibly change the picture, so Smally usually keeps the lossless file, which saves less.

## What stays the same

- Transparency. A palette copy keeps the transparent areas of your PNG; if a palette would change them noticeably, Smally keeps the lossless file instead.
- Your original. Smally never changes it; the copy downloads as a new file, named like logo-smally.png.
- Your privacy. The copy is made in this tab, on your device. Your files never leave this tab.

## What it does not do

- Animated PNGs, 16-bit PNGs and CMYK images are left as they are, with a sentence that says why.
- Up to about 24 megapixels on most computers and 12 on a phone or a small computer. Smally for Mac takes PNGs up to 40 megapixels.

## Questions

- **Does compressing a PNG remove its transparency?** No. Smally keeps the transparent areas. If a smaller palette would change them noticeably, it keeps the lossless copy instead.
- **Is the compressed PNG lossless?** Sometimes. The lossless repack changes no pixel. The palette copy uses at most 256 colours, which is why Preview lets you compare it with the original before you download.
- **Why did my PNG barely get smaller?** Photographs and images with many colours keep the lossless file, which saves less. When a copy would not be at least 1% lighter, Smally keeps the original and says Already small.
- **Is my PNG uploaded anywhere?** No. The copy is made in this tab, on your device. Your files never leave this tab.
- **Can it make a WebP out of my PNG?** Smally for Mac can offer As WebP for some PNGs. The browser version keeps PNG files as PNG.
