AVIF is already a compact format, so the real question is whether a lighter copy exists. Smally for Mac checks, and keeps your original when it does not.

## How it works

1. **Drag your file in.** Drop your file on the drop zone above, or choose it with the file picker. Nothing is uploaded.
2. **Compare the original and the copy.** Press Preview on the finished row, drag the divider between the original and the copy, and look at it at 100 % or 200 %.
3. **Download the lighter copy.** Download the copy you like. Your original stays untouched, and a copy is offered only when it is lighter.

## What Smally for Mac does with an AVIF

Smally for Mac opens AVIF files and makes one lighter AVIF copy of each. There is no quality setting to pick: the copy is made at a fixed setting and compared with its original before it is offered.

A copy is kept only when it is at least 1% lighter than the original. Otherwise Smally keeps your original, and the row says Already small.

## When keeping the original is the right answer

AVIF is a newer format than JPEG and WebP, and a file saved as AVIF has often been through an efficient encoder already. Another pass may save only a few bytes, so for many AVIF files the honest result is no new copy. That is not a failure: Smally keeps the original instead of handing you a file that is barely lighter.

An AVIF saved at a generous quality setting is more likely to get lighter. On one test file in our own checks an AVIF went from 315 KB to 114 KB; yours will differ, and Smally promises no size.

## What stays the same

- Your original. Smally never changes it; Save puts the copy next to it, named like photo-smally.avif.
- Your privacy. Smally for Mac works on your Mac, and your files are never uploaded.
- Your choice. Press Preview to compare the copy with the original before you keep it.

## Limits and the browser

Smally for Mac takes images up to 200 MB, most of them up to 40 megapixels, and up to 50 files at a time.

The browser version has no AVIF encoder, so it does not make AVIF copies. It takes JPEG, PNG and WebP.
